Actonel is used to treat and also to help prevent Paget's disease of the bone and osteoporosis in post-menopausal women and people taking glucocoricoids.  It may increase bone mass and prevent bone loss. 

Taking Actonel

Take actonel with a full glass of water on an empty stomach.  Do not eat or drink anything before taking actonel and for at least 30 minutes after taking it.  In addition to this, do not lie down for 30 minutes after taking this drug.  Not taking actonel in the proper manner may lead to sores in the mouth or damage to the esophagus.

For at least 30 minutes after taking actonel do not drink milk or take any other medication, vitamins, supplements or herbal products.  Calcium supplements especially, or products containing calcium-aluminum or magnesium such as antacids or mineral supplements containing calcium can stop your body from absorbing actonel.  While taking actonel, eat foods that are rich in calcium and vitamin D or take additional supplements.

Precautions with Actonel

If you miss a dose of actonel, skip that dose for the day.  Do not attempt to take it later in the day and do not take two doses of the drug in the same day.  If an overdose is suspected, contact your doctor immediately.

Overdose of actonel may lead to seizures, numbness or tingling around the mouth or in the hands or feet, muscle spasms, cramps, or twitches.  If poisoning occurs, give the victim a glass of milk and call the poison control center.

Try to undergo any dental surgery or treatments before starting to use actonel as this drug may cause jaw problems.

Before making the decision to buy actonel it is important to be aware that in certain cases, severe bone, muscle or joint pain may result after taking this drug.  This pain may not start for years after first using actonel.  It is, therefore, important to consult your doctor if you are experiencing severe or unusual pain.

Speak with a health care provider as soon as possible if you experience any severe pain, difficulty swallowing or pain when swallowing, new or worsening heartburn, chest pain, itching, rash, hives, blisters on the skin, difficulty breathing, hoarseness, sensitivity to light, painful or swollen gums, loosening of the teeth, numbness or a heavy feeling in the jaw, poor healing of the jaw, eyes that are swollen or red, painful eyes and swelling of the lower legs, ankles, feet, hands, eyes, lips, tongue, throat or face.  If you experience any other side effects of actonel that become severe or do not go away contact your doctor.  Some other side effects are nausea, burping, dry mouth, stomach pain, diarrhea, constipation, gas, headache, dizziness, depression, anxiety, weakness, leg cramps, back pain, frequent or urgent need to urinate, painful urination, dry eyes or ringing in the ear.

Actonel may be referred to by different names in different countries.  It is generically known as Risedronate.  Some other names used to refer to actonel are: Ductonar, Rentop, Ribastamin, Ridron, Risedon, Benet, Acrel, Optinate Septimum, Optinate, Risofos, Optinate.
