Schizophrenia is a severe brain disorder that impairs an individual’s thinking, acting and seeing ability. People suffering with this problem behave abnormally. In other words, they may hear voices other people don’t hear and also feel like other people are reading their minds and are plotting to harm them. One in every hundred people experiences this problem during his or her lifetime.

Symptoms

Some of the signs of schizophrenia include:

Hallucination: This include seeing or hearing of things that does not exist in reality, however, hearing voices is the most common type of hallucination that people usually go through when suffering with this problem. Another type may include feeling things like fingers touching their bodies when they are alone.

Delusion: It is false beliefs that are not real. People struggling with schizophrenia can have delusions that seem bizarre such as believing that others can easily harass or harm them. They also believe that people on television are directing special messages to them.

Thought disorder: It is also known as disorganized thinking. One’s effective communication can be impaired and also answers to questions may be completely or partially unrelated.

Occurrence of Schizophrenia

It occurs in early adulthood. Friends and family may spot warning signs long before its primary symptoms occur. During its early stage patients isolate themselves from the world and stop enjoying activities that he or she used to enjoy.

Treatment

Schizophrenia treatment includes effective medications and some useful therapies that have been developed to assist patients suffering from this problem:

Schizophrenia Therapy

Individual psychotherapy: It involves regular sessions between the therapist and patient. Under this therapy the major focus is given on the patient’s thoughts and feelings. With its regular sessions patients are able to differentiate between fake and real.

Cognitive treatment: It is a form of behavioral treatment, which includes paper and pencil exercises and also some computer based exercise. Such exercises seem to be helpful in developing existing cognitive skills in the patient.

Medicines for treating Schizophrenia

Abilify, Seroquel and Geodon are some of the most effective and widely recommended drugs by doctors for its treatment.

Clinicians believe that depression are due to biological, social and psychological factors. Treatment that exclusively focuses on only one of these factors will not prove beneficial compared to treatment that addresses all aspects. Researchers are trying to completely grasp all the factors such as genetic, personal, societal and environmental, since depression is a complex disorder. It is really difficult to treat this problem while focussing only on one factor. Patients undergoing depression treatment must understand that the first line treatment may not prove effective for them and that the doctor may have to experiment with few depression treatments to determine what works for that individual.

Symptoms of Depression

Symptom of depression varies from individual to individual and it is not necessary that every person will experience same symptoms. The frequency, severity and duration of symptoms vary depending on the individual and his illness. Some of the common signs and symptoms of depression include:

Loss of interest in life

Anxious or empty feeling

Irritability

Fatigue

Decreased energy

Guilt or helplessness feeling

Insomnia

Thoughts of suicide

The saddest part of depression is that most of the people suffering from depressive illness never seek treatment. This can result in worsening of their condition overtime. Majority of the people are not aware that even the most severe depression can get better with treatment. Psychotherapies and medications along with other methods can prove effective for the treatment of depression.

Treatment

Treatment for depression, like for most mental disorders, usually relies on psychotherapy and medication for the quickest and strongest effects. Treatment usually starts immediately after the initial clinical interview with a mental health professional. Depression treatment takes time and patience is required. It normally take 6-8 weeks on an antidepressant medications for one to see its effects. If the medication has not shown improvement, the physician may have to try 2 or 3 different medications before finding the one that works. The same may also be true for psychotherapy — the first therapist may not be the one you end up working with. Most modern psychotherapy treatment for depression takes 6 to 12 months, going once per week for 50 minutes at a time. Abilify is a commonly prescribed medicine for depression. This medication is often prescribed along with counselling to maximize the best therapy for the patient.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a mood disorder which is characterized by excessive and exaggerated worries. Individuals suffering from GAD are found worrying about money, family, health and work. Their worries are most of the time unrealistic and out of proportion for any particular situation. They are easily startled by other people and sometimes suffer depression. This situation is more commonly seen in women as compared to men.

What causes GAD?

The exact causes of GAD are still unknown. Genetics, brain chemistry and environmental stresses can contribute to the development of this disease.

Genetics: Some scientists believe that family history can play a crucial role in increasing the chances that a person will develop GAD. The tendency to develop this condition can be inherited from the ancestors.

Brain Chemistry: Neurotransmitters are chemicals associated with the transfer of information from one nerve to the other. In some people, pathways that connect brain regions do not run efficiently and problems related to anxiety and mood disorder arises.

Environmental factors: Some stressful events such as abuse, the death of a loved one, divorce or many such factors can lead to GAD. Also, withdrawal from addictive substances such as alcohol, caffeine or nicotine may worsen anxiety.

What are the symptoms of GAD?

Generally, GAD makes a difference in the way a person thinks, however, it can also lead to some of the following symptoms:

Excessive worry and tension

Being easily startled

An unrealistic view of problems

Restlessness

Trembling

Irritability

Muscle tension

Headaches

Trouble falling or staying asleep

What are the treatment options?

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)

It is the most effective therapy and is successful in most of the cases. CBT helps the patient to understand how their problems, thoughts and feelings affect each other.

Applied Relaxation

During this treatment, the main focus is on relaxing the muscles to reduce anxiety in difficult situations. This technique must be taught by trained therapists and learn how to relax your muscles.

Medication

In case, the psychological treatment does not help, medication is offered to the patients. Cymbalta is one of the best medicines that are generally prescribed by the doctors for the treatment of GAD.
