Rosuvastatin Mechanism of Action
Crestor belongs to a HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors group of medicines that lowers LDL cholesterol and raises the HDL cholesterol level in the blood. Cholesterol is made by the body and is present in most of the foods. However, Crestor is found effective in controlling LDL cholesterol level that is made by the liver and it does not reduce the cholesterol that comes from the fat present in food. Crestor works by inhibiting the HMG-CoA reductase enzyme responsible for making cholesterol in the liver. By inhibiting the action of this enzyme, Crestor reduces the amount of cholesterol produced by the liver, causing it to extract cholesterol from the blood. This eventually leads to the reduction in cholesterol level in the blood.
