Januvia
Januvia belongs to dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor class of drug that is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Manufactured by Merck & Co, this oral diabetic drug helps control blood sugar level in the patients. Januvia Composition
The active ingredient present in the drug is Sitagliptin and the inactive ingredients include microcrystalline cellulose, anhydrous dibasic calcium phosphate, croscarmellose sodium, magnesium stearate, and sodium stearyl fumarate. Coating in the tablet is of polyvinyl alcohol, polyethylene glycol (macrogol), talc, titanium dioxide, red iron oxide, and yellow iron oxide.
Januvia Mechanism
Sitagliptin belongs to DPP-4 inhibitors group of drug that increases the amount of incretin released by the intestine. Incretin is a type of hormone that increases insulin levels if blood sugar is high which will in turn reduce the amount of sugar in the blood. Sitagliptin works by inhibiting the enzyme dipeptidyl peptidase. This enzyme breaks down the incretins and gastrointestinal hormones that are released in response to a meal. The drug also helps in increasing the secretion of insulin and at the same time suppresses the release of glucagon by the pancreas. This maintains the blood glucose levels at normal levles and prevents blood sugar level to spike.
