Seroquel Composition
The active ingredient is Seroquel is Quetiapine. The inactive ingredients include povidone, calcium hydrogen phosphate, sodium starch glycolate, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, lactose monohydrate, hypromellose, polyethylene glycol and titanium dioxide. Every Seroquel 25 mg tablet contains red ferric oxide and yellow ferric oxide whereas each 100mg and 400 mg tablet contains only yellow ferric oxide.
Mechanism of Quetiapine
Patients suffering from schizophrenia may experience either its positive or negative symptoms. Seroquel is effective in treating symptoms of schizophrenia. It is observed that conventional antipsychotics drugs are less effective against the negative symptoms but Quetiapine are found effective in treating negative symptom. Seroquel works by interacting with various neurotransmitters in the brain such as serotonin and dopamine. Schizophrenia is caused by an over activity of dopamine in the brain. Seroquel is a dopamine antagonist. It blocks dopamine receptors in the brain which will help control the symptoms of schizophrenia. Neurotransmitters are the chemicals that are stored in the nerve cells that transmit messages between nerve cells. Dopamine and serotonin are neurotransmitters that are involved in regulating the mood and behavior of a person. Over activity of dopamine in the brain of schizophrenia patients results in delusion or hallucinations. Thus, these symptoms are controlled with Seroquel.
