Actonel is taken to treat osteoporosis and Paget's disease of the bone.  It may also be taken to help prevent osteoporosis and Paget's disease.  Post-menopausal women and people taking glucocorticoids may take actonel to treat osteoporosis.

Generic actonel helps to increase the thickness of bone and help prevent bone loss.  However, it is worth noting that it does not cure osteoporosis or Paget's disease of the bone.

Actonel is taken orally in the form of a tablet.  It should be taken immediately after getting out of bed in the morning before eating or drinking anything.  Swallow the medication while sitting or while standing upright.  Take actonel with a full glass of plain water.  Do not lie down for 30 minutes after taking generic actonel.  Do not take any other oral medications, vitamins, supplements or antacids for at least 30 minutes after taking this drug.  Do not suck on the tablets, or split, chew or crush them.  It is advisable to eat foods that are rich in calcium and vitamin D, or take supplements for the duration of treatment with actonel.

Talk to your doctor before discontinuing use with actonel.  If you miss a dose, do not take two doses in one day.  Take the missed dose the next day if you are not taking actonel daily.  If you are taking actonel daily, skip the missed dose.

If you experience severe bone, muscle, or joint pain after taking actonel, call your doctor immediately.  Improper use of actonal may cause sores in the mouth or damage to the esophagus.  If you develop hip or thigh pain, contact your doctor.  Call your doctor immediately if you experience difficulty swallowing or pain when swallowing, new or worsening heartburn, chest pain, itching, rash, hives, blisters on the skin, difficulty breathing, hoarseness, sensitivity to light, painful or swollen gums, loosening of the teeth, numbness or a heavy feeling in the jaw, poor healing of the jaw, eyes that are swollen or red, painful eyes, or swelling of the lower legs, ankles, feet, hands, eyes, lips, tongue, throat or face.
