Prevacid, the brand name for Lansoprazole, is used to reduce the amount of acid produced by the stomach.  It is a drug that falls under the class of proton pump inhibitors.  Prevacid is used to prevent and treat intestinal ulcers, erosive esophagi is (the damage done to the esophagus by stomach acid) as well as other conditions related to excessive stomach acid.
This drug is not appropriate treatment for immediate relief of heartburn symptoms.

Side effects of Prevacid

A sudden allergic reaction may occur when Prevacid is taken.  If you experience symptoms related to an allergic reaction including hives, a swollen throat, tongue lips or face or difficulty breathing you need to seek emergency medical attention immediately.

There are also less serious side effects associated with Prevacid.  This may include headaches; nausea and stomach pain, diarrhea or constipation.  However this is not a complete list of side effects, a medical professional should always be contacted if adverse symptoms are experienced after Prevacid is taken.

How to take Prevacid

Prevacid comes in a number of forms and each should be taken according to the accompanying instructions.  As always take exactly the dose prescribed, do not stop taking the medication before the course runs out or before a doctor’s instruction.

Time delay capsules should not be broken or chewed.  Take capsules with plenty of water.  If you are unable to take whole time delay capsules open the capsules and sprinkle over food such as pudding, applesauce or yoghurt.  The content of capsules will also dissolve in apple juice, orange juice and tomato juice.

Prevacid is also provided in the form or oral granules.  Use only water to dissolve oral granules, stir the mixture and drink the solution immediately; do not save the solution for later consumption.

You may also find that your Prevacid come in the form of orally disintegrating tablets.  These should be placed in your mouth where it will dissolve right away without the need to chew.  Optionally dissolving tablets can be taken via an oral syringe or through a nasogastric feeding tube.

If you are also taking sucralfate (Carafate) try to avoid doing so within a 30 minute time span of taking Prevacid.

Interactions with other drugs

These include ampicillin (Omnipen, Principen); atazanavir (Reyataz); clopidogrel (Plavix); digoxin (Lanoxin, Lanoxicaps) and ketoconazole (Nizoral). Drugs containing iron (Feosol, Mol-Iron, Fergon, Femiron, others) or theophylline (such as Elixophyllin, Respbid, Slo-Bid, Theobid, Theoclear, Theo-Dur, Uniphyl) can also cause problems with Prevacid.  You also need to tell your doctor if you are using a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin).

Important things to know about Prevacid

Check with your doctor whether it is safe to take Prevacid if you have a liver disease.  Do not have Prevacid 24HR more than once every day, for 14 days.  After 14 days you should wait 4 months before you start to take Prevacid again.  If your symptoms resume before the 4 months is over speak to your doctor.
Do not use over the counter Prevacid 24HR without speaking to your doctor if you current suffer from: trouble or pain swallowing; black or bloody stools; vomit with blood or coffee-ground like granules; heartburn over three months or more; frequent chest pains; unexplained weight loss or nausea, vomiting or stomach pain.
