Tamoxifen is a medication that is used to treat breast cancer, although it also has other uses. It is one of the medications that are known as anti-estrogens and blocks estrogen activity in the breast. This may stop tumors that need estrogen from growing.

How to use Tamoxifen

Buy Tamoxifen in tablet form to be taken by mouth. It is usually taken regularly, with or without food, according to a doctor's prescription. Women who are taking tamoxifen as a treatment will be informed by their doctor how long the treatment will continue. The treatment should not be stopped without direction from a doctor. A double dose should not be taken if a dose is missed.

Side effects of Tamoxifen

Some side effects of Tamoxifen could be increased tumor or bone pain or reddening around the site of the tumor, hot flashes, tiredness, nausea, dizziness, headache, depression, hair thinning, stomach cramps, loss of weight, loss of sexual desire (or ability in men) and constipation. A doctor should be consulted if any of these symptoms persist or are severe.

More serious side effects of Tamoxifen could be loss of appetite, problems with vision, yellowing of the eyes or skin, blisters, rash, fever, thirst, restlessness, muscle weakness, unusual bleeding, bruising or swelling - particularly of the eyes, lips, face, throat, tongue, arms, feet, hands, ankles or lower legs. If the patient experiences any of these symptoms after taking Tamoxifen a doctor should be consulted straight away.

There could be an increased risk of developing other cancers because of taking Tamoxifen, including liver cancer. This risk should be discussed with a doctor. Tamoxifen can also increase the risk of developing cataracts.

Precautions with Tamoxifen

Before tamoxifen is taken the patient should discuss with their doctor any allergies as well as any other medications, vitamins, supplements and herbal products they are taking or might take.

The patient should also discuss any previous high cholesterol. If pregnant, planning become to pregnant or breastfeeding, tamoxifen should not be taken or if taking tamoxifen the patient should avoid pregnancy and breastfeeding. All health care providers should be informed if a patient is taking tamoxifen.

Signs of breast cancer should still be monitored as it remains possible for breast cancer to develop while taking tamoxifen. Any new lump in the breast should be immediately notified to a doctor.
