Signs, Diagnosis and Treatments of Asthma

Asthma is a chronic disease the affects airways of the lungs. Asthma causes swelling and narrows the airway that lead to symptom such as wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing.  Asthma causes increased mucous secretions inside the bronchial tubes and severe inflammation in the airways. Allergies or pollutants are triggers that exacerbate the symptoms of asthma.

Causes of Asthma :

There are causes to asthma. A person can be affected if he has a family history of asthma or other associated allergic conditions such as eczema, food allergy or hay fever. If you have infections of the airways or are allergic to pollen, dust mites, animal fur or feathers,  your chances of getting asthma is increased. Some painkillers such as aspirin and ibuprofen also can spark an attack. Asthmatic attack can become more severe due to cigarette smoke and chemical fumes.  The following are primary causes of asthma :

  • Airway and chest infections
  • Airborne irritants
  • Foods containing sulphites
  • Weather conditions
  • Some Indoor conditions

Symptoms of Asthma:

The early warning signs and symptoms of asthma include:

  • Frequent cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Coughing or wheezing attacks
  • Feeling tired after workout
  • Sudden decreases or changes in lung functions

Severe symptoms of asthma are life-threatening. If you experience any of these signs and symptoms, consult your health expert immediately for emergency treatment.

Diagnosis and Treatment:

Your doctor diagnoses asthma by analyzing your family history of the disease along with a physical test and test results.  A breathing test is conducted to determine the degree of swelling in the airways. A few other important tests are also done such as allergy blood tests and a chest X-ray.  In addition to recommended lifestyle changes, doctors may prescribe safe and effective medication to treat asthma. Some the most prescribed drugs for asthma are Advair, Singulair and Flovent. You should however consult your doctor before starting the medication.
