Depression : Main Causes, Diagnosis And Recommended Medication

Depression is a common yet serious psychological disease that directly affects the way you think and feel.  One who suffers from such a disease may experience fatigue, loss of interest in life, insomnia, mood swings, and changes in appetite. If the condition is left untreated and last for extended periods of time, the person may fall into a more serous depression classified as a clinical depression.  Researches reveal that each year over 6% of Americans express the symptoms of clinical depression. These depressive disorders not only attributed by the negative and oppressive thoughts but also characterized by the specific changes in bodily functions as well.  Depending on signs and symptoms, depression is categorized as follows:

Causes Of Depression:

There are several reasons that trigger depression among the individuals.  The following are the primary causes of depression.

  • Serious loss, damage death, unemployment and other relationship concerns.
  • Vitamin deficiency and other biological factors
  • Some medications meant to control blood pressure and anti-migraine
  • Chronic illness like diabetes and heart disease further lead to the depression

Signs And Symptoms Of Depression :

Although clinical depression is difficult to diagnose,  it may be apparent to those who experience major depression. These symptoms make a significant change in the way how a person functions. The following are key areas where depression causes major changes in people. In general the symptoms of depression are :

  • Feeling down, depressed or hopeless.
  • Having little interest or pleasure in doing things (anhedonia).
  • Early morning awakening (occurs in 90% approximately)

Besides the above listed symptoms, other symptoms may also be presented in clinical depression. These symptoms include changes in sleep, changes in appetite, poor concentration, loss of energy and lack of interest.

Diagnosis And Treatment:

If depression is suspected, consult your doctor immediately. He will suggest the medication, lifestyle changes, and counselling as part of the therapy.  While there are no medical tests that are used to diagnosis clinical depression, doctors use documented reports and the DSM IV criterion to diagnose the disease. Doctors recommend a number of drugs to treat the depression. These drugs include Cymbalta, Zoloft, Paxil and Celexa etc. It is however mandatory to consult your doctor before starting the medication.
