What is Evista?
Evista is a drug commonly given to post-menopausal women and is generally used to treat or prevent osteoporosis. Evista is sometimes called Raloxifine, and is intended to affect the cycle of bone formation and reduce the loss of bone tissue. Evista is sometimes used to guard against invasive breast cancer in post-menopausal women with osteoporosis, or those with invasive breast cancer in the family.
Evista is generally prescribed by a doctor or health professional and should not be taken unless it has been prescribed to you. Evista should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor and the dose should not be exceeded. If you do overdose on Evista you should consult your doctor immediately. Symptoms of an overdose include dizziness and leg cramps. If you miss a dose you should take it as soon as possible. You should not take a double dose.
What are the side effects?
Evista can have serious side effects such as chest pain, unusual vaginal bleeding, sudden numbness of the body, particularly in one side of the body, difficulty breathing, severe lower back pain and breast tenderness. Some less serious symptoms include dizziness, hot flashes and increased sweating. There may be other side effects that are not listed here, so if you have any worries then consult your doctor.
You should tell your doctor about any other medication you are on, whether it is prescribed, over the counter or a vitamin, mineral or herbal supplement. You should always consult your doctor before beginning to take any other medication while using Evista.
Evista should be used in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle, diet and weight control. If you have not started, or are still experiencing the menopause, you should consult your doctor before taking Evista. Evista can sometimes be taken with a vitamin D or calcium supplements. However, do not take more calcium substitutes than have been prescribed, as they will not give extra protection to your bones, but may cause side effects such as kidney stones.
What if I'm pregnant?
Evista is intended for use by post-menopausal women, so it's unlikely that pregnancy will occur. However, Evista should not be taken when pregnant, so if you are pregnant tell your doctor immediately. If you become pregnant while taking the medication consult your doctor immediately.
What should I avoid while taking Evista?
You should not take Evista if you are allergic to Raloxifine, and you should tell your doctor if you smoke, suffer from high blood pressure or have ever had a blood clot. If you have recently had surgery you should tell your doctor, and should not take Evista if you are having surgery or are expecting a long period of bed rest. If you have a planned surgery, stop taking Evista at least 72 hours before.
There may be other side effects and things to avoid when taking Evista than are listed here. If you have any concerns about Evista, consult your doctor.
