What is Evista?

Evista, generically called Raloxifine, is a drug used to treat or prevent osteoporosis in post-menopausal women.  It is also used to reduce the risk of invasive breast cancer in post-menopausal women who have osteoporosis or are at risk of invasive breast cancer.  It may also be used for other purposes that are not listed here.  Evista affects the cycle of bone formation, and reduces the loss of bone tissue. 

How is Evista prescribed?

A doctor or health professional should prescribe Evista, and you should always tell your doctor if you are any other medication.  You should not take Evista of you are allergic to Raloxifine, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have ever had a blood clot.  Before taking the treatment, you should tell your doctor if you smoke, if you have coronary artery disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, liver or kidney disease, a history of stroke, if you have not started or finished the menopause yet, or if you have had breast cancer.  If you need to have surgery or any kind of bed rest you must stop taking your medication at least 72 hours before, and a doctor or surgeon should know you are taking Evista before they undertake any surgery.

Evista should be prescribed by a doctor and should be taken exactly as prescribed.  You should not take more than the recommended dose, and should not take Evista for longer than prescribed.  If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, but do not double dose if you miss one.  If you overdose, consult a doctor immediately.  Symptoms of overdose include dizziness and leg cramps.

Evista should be used together with a healthy lifestyle and diet, and may be taken with calcium and vitamin D supplements.  If you already take calcium supplements, do not take more than your doctor has prescribed.  Taking extra calcium will not provide extra protection for your bones, and may cause side effects such as kidney stones.  Avoid sitting for long periods of time while travelling if you are taking Evista.

What are the side effects of Evista?

Evista can have serious side effects, so consult your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following:  sudden numbness or weakness, particularly on one side of the body, severe lower back pain, chest pain, unusual vaginal bleeding, difficulty breathing, swelling in the hands or feet, fever or 'flu like symptoms and breast pain or tenderness.  Some less serious side effects can be dizziness and headaches, hot flashes, joint pain, runny nose and increased sweating.  There may be other side effects that are not listed here, so consult your doctor if you have any concerns.
