Combivent

Combivent is the brand name of the drug Ipratropium/Salbutamol, which is formulated by combining two bronchodilators, ipratropium bromide and salbutamol sulfate. The medication is used in the management and controlling of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. Composition

The active ingredients present in Combivent are Ipratropium Bromide and Albuterol Sulfate and inactive ingredients in the medication are water, Benzalkonium Chloride, Edetate Disodium and Hydrochloric Acid.

Mechanism

The presence of two bronchodilators albuterol and ipratropium in Combivent is found effective in the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. COPD is known to cause narrowing of the airways thereby creating breathing problem. In order to treat this condition, patients are prescribed with Combivent that dilate or enlarge the airways by relaxing the muscles surrounding the airways. Both of the bronchodilators work in different mechanism but offer the same result, i.e. relaxes the airways muscle and open the airways. Albuterol, a beta-2 type of agonist, stimulates beta-2 receptors thereby relaxing the muscle of the airways. Ipratropium works by blocking the cholinergic nerves that control the smooth muscles on the airways thereby causing the muscles to relax and airways to enlarge.
