Niaspan Composition
Niacin or Nicotinic acid is the active ingredient of Niaspan whereas inactive ingredients of the drug include hypromellose, povidone, stearic acid, polyethylene glycol, titanium dioxide, synthetic red and yellow iron oxides, FD&C yellow #6/sunset yellow FCF Aluminum Lake.
How does Niaspan Work?
Nicotinic acid is a chemical that is usually consumed along with the diet and is also made by the body. Patients are prescribed with Niaspan because it contains nicotinic acid in much larger doses compared to the amount consumed or made by the body. Large dose of nicotinic acid is found effective in reducing cholesterol and triglyceride levels which increases the activity of the enzyme, lipoprotein lipase. This enzyme breaks down VLDL and increases their removal from the body. Thus, this drug works by increasing the HDL cholesterol level and reducing LDL cholesterol as well as triglyceride levels. Accumulation of LDL in the arteries increases the risk of heart disease which is actually protected by the high HDL cholesterol level.
