Montelukast Mechanism of Action
Singulair belongs to a leukotriene inhibitors group of medications that is used to prevent symptoms of asthma and allergic reactions. Leukotrienes are naturally occurring chemicals that are produced by the body in response to allergens and dust. These chemicals cause swelling and inflammation in the airways and also lead to the constriction of the muscles of the respiratory tract. Leukotrienes are released in the nose due to the exposure to allergens, thereby leading to allergy symptoms. Thus, Montelukast works by blocking the leukotriene receptors and preventing leukotriene chemicals from causing symptoms associated with asthma or allergy.
